All About Wall Decals

If you’re just starting your shopping for wall decals for kids rooms, you need to know that a lot of different terms are used to mean the same thing. And a lot of things are called decals or murals when they’re really something else.

Most decals these days are made of vinyl and are repositionable stickers that can be moved up to 100 times. The range in sizes and designs means there’s a style perfect for your kids room.

Plan out what you want based on size and effort before you start shopping and fall in love with something that won’t work for your space. Check out the options below – individual decals to place around the room, complete kits to create a scene or large murals. All are appropriate for a kids room or nursery.

Here’s a run-down of the types you can expect to see and what to look for to help you as you navigate the shopping.

Decals/stickers/graphics

You’ll see these terms used interchangeably. Generally, what it means is that you’re getting a few to a lot of individual images, not necessarily meant to be used to create a scene. For example, there’s a set of Dora stickers that includes three different images of Dora. Great for placing around the room, but strange if you clump them together.

This category also has a wide range in size. A set might be four paper sized sheets, which can hold a lot of images but they’ll all be fairly small. Great for putting on furniture or a small area around the bed, but not for dramatic effect. Others can be quite large, which makes them dramatic, but you need to have the wall space to play them up.

Borders and wallpaper

Still fairly common, especially sticker-style wall borders. You’ll want to make sure you understand if you’re getting a stick-on type or pre-pasted that goes on the old-fashioned way. (And comes off the hard way!) Note that occasionally you’ll see the word “border” to describe a particular set of stickers meant to go along a straight edge in a specific design and not necessarily an actual wallpaper border.

Murals

A term that pretty much means a scene. This could be a single piece of paper that goes up like wallpaper – a stick-on poster, if you will – or lots of wall decals that work together to create a scene. The larger, single sheet murals come in the repositionable stick-on kind, as well as pre-pasted that require water.

Make sure you know what you’re getting. I see a lot of murals where it says “self-adhesive” and what they’re describing is a stencil, not a graphic. So you’d end up with a mural, but only after you paint it on.

Traceable

These are starting to pop up more and are another case of making sure you read the description. Traceable generally means a stencil. It sticks to the wall, and rather than paint through it, you trace the design, then go back and paint. This is a great idea if you want a specific image, but in a specific color, but there will be work required to get there.

How to Copy Phineas and Ferb’s Bedroom

I have totally become a Phineas and Ferb fan of late. What’s not to love? Smart kids, huge adventures, positive attitudes, enthusiastic outlooks – these are great role models in my book.

They aren’t ordinary kids, so of course, they don’t have an ordinary bedroom. Not even close. We don’t see it very often because they’re usually hanging in the backyard. Well, when they aren’t looking for Frankenstein’s brain or fighting a mummy. The first time I saw the bedroom, I just squealed. It’s fun, creative and just plain different. Huh. Sounds like Phineas and Ferb. Ha!

So, you could have a Phineas and Ferb bedroom that has bedding and decor that features the characters (and Perry, of course) or you could have Phineas and Ferb’s bedroom. Cool.

Let’s walk through what it would take to have such a thing.
Phineas_and_Ferb_in_their_bedroom

Wait!

Before we start, are you sure you want to copy this bedroom? It’s a celebration of unique personalities, varied interests and creative thinking. Copying it seems like a shame. Maybe you could copy the spirit of the room instead?

Looking around their room, you see several examples of the unexpected. Phineas sleeps in a raft and an oil drum serves as Ferb’s nightstand. What could you use in a way different from what it was meant for?

The Room

We’ll start from the outside and work our way in. Which means walls, ceilings and floor to start. And those are actually the easiest parts.

The walls of the room are blue. Just blue. All the same. No big deal there.

The floor is wood. Again, nothing out of the ordinary.

The ceiling is painted like the sky – light blue with clouds. This is pretty easy to do, especially if you’re ok with cartoony, fluffy clouds. Just paint the ceiling blue, then draw on your fluffy clouds. (Note, if you have a popcorn ceiling, you might consider scraping off the popcorn. Least fun surface ever to paint.) You can use some white chalk to draw the clouds to get them the size and shape you want, then fill them in with white paint.

Instead of painting the clouds, you could use cloud wall decals on the blue paint. (Make sure you let the paint cure for a month before you stick on the decals.) If you’re really ambitious, you could use a sky wallpaper on the ceiling, but you are far braver than me if you go that route!

In the middle of the ceiling, the boys have a big yellow light fixture that mimics the sun.

Phineas

There is just so, so, so much to see on this side of the room. And I’d wonder just how he managed to do it except that we are talking about Phineas here.

Let’s see what we’ve got going here on his side of the room. The bed is the focal point, in fact it would be the standout piece if it wasn’t for everything else in the room. Still, this is a cool idea for a bed. Phineas has a yellow raft with an aquarium headboard and blue bedding. Simple genius really, but still not necessarily easy to do. I’ve hunted all over looking for a raft that would work for putting a mattress in. Once you get that, the rest is easy.

Bed – yellow raft, aquarium headboard, blue bedding

Now, the decor around the room gets rather crazy and random. So this is definitely where you could start to put more of your own personal stamp. Near the bed, he has a giant gnome, purple bean bag chair and a totem pole. There’s a table-style desk with an orange desk chair and hanging on the wall is a skull with big horns and a butterfly net. There’s a tall thin purple dresser and the other side of the bed, a trunk serves as nightstand with a black alarm clock.

All of these are possible to find, but again, you could come up with your own crazy collection of items based on your own summer vacation adventures.

  • yellow raft
  • blue bedding
  • totem pole
  • giant gnome
  • purple bean bag chair
  • table desk
  • orange desk chair
  • skull with big horns
  • aquarium headboard
  • butterfly net
  • trunk nightstand
  • black alarm clock with red numbers
  • tall thin purple dresser

Ferb

After being on Phineas’ side of the room, some parts of Ferb’s look a little boring. His bed is just a plain old regular brown bed with a bookshelf headboard. Simple enough to find one of those. The purple and pink bedding – that might be harder to convince a boy to have though!

Looking around Ferb’s side of the room, we find a large version of the Easter Island heads, red bookcases and a drafting table for a desk. It looks like he’s scored a red London phone box and randomly decorating things are a purple pennant, red hardhat and huge wall calendar. His nightstand is an oil drum with a bookshelf cutout into the bottom part. Sitting on top is a purple lantern and a molecule model.

Looking around the room, we do see the basics of a kids room. Bed, nightstand, dresser, desk. Check. But the interpretation of those pieces is unique. Add to those interesting mementos from their summer adventures and there you have it.

My advice for mimicking the room? Find interesting interpretations of the basic furniture pieces and make sure nothing matches. Then start adding in things based on your child’s interest. And it doesn’t have to be the normal thing you might find in a bedroom – when’s the last time you saw a giant lawn gnome in a bedroom? Make a list of interests or trips or adventures or memories to use. Then pick one interesting thing from each to add to the room. You’ll have it covered in no time!

  • bookcase headboard
  • purple/pink bedding
  • easter island head (what are those called?)
  • red bookcases
  • purple pennant
  • red hardhat
  • drafting table
  • huge calendar on wall/ceiling – looks like those desk pad types
  • oil drum nightstand – cutout with books in it
  • purple lantern
  • molecule model
  • red London phone box

About Wall Decals for Kids

Different types and what to expect

If you’re just starting your shopping for wall decals for kids rooms, you need to know that a lot of different terms are used to mean the same thing. And a lot of things are called decals or murals when they’re really something else.

Here’s a run-down of the types you can expect to see and what to look for.

Decals/stickers/graphics

Dora's Enchanted Forest Wall DecalsYou’ll see these terms used interchangeably.

Others can be quite large – like at Fathead – which makes them dramatic, but you need to have the wall space to play them up.

Borders and wallpaper

Still fairly common, especially sticker-style wall borders. You’ll want to make sure you understand if you’re getting a stick-on type or pre-pasted that goes on the old-fashioned way. (And comes off the hard way!)

Note that occasionally you’ll see the word “border” to describe a particular set of stickers meant to go along a straight edge in a specific design and not necessarily an actual wallpaper border.

MagicMurals and Murals Your Way offer you both options when you place your order.

I see a lot of murals where it says “self-adhesive” and what they’re describing is a stencil, not a graphic. So you’d end up with a mural, but only after you paint it on.

Traceable

These are starting to pop up more and are another case of making sure you read the description. Traceable generally means a stencil. This is a great idea if you want a specific image in a specific color, but there will be work required to get there.

Scoping out some magical fairy tale wall art

cinderella canvas wall artFairy tales are a popular place to start with a theme for a child’s room. You can go with super child-like, cartoony images – easy enough to find those – but there are at least two options I’ve run into lately that provide more elegant, grown-up style for you.

The great benefit to these pieces of fairy tale wall art is that they can grow with your child, no matter what theme(s) they eventually decorate with. The colors of both lines I found tend to be fairly muted, and the interpretive art of the second set is easy adapted to a non-fairy tale room.

The Picture It On Canvas fairy tale art line, which includes the Cinderella piece here, is very into flat silhouettes. The colors and certain elements definitely seem to be influenced by Disney options, but they include several stories that haven’t been Disney-fied as yet.

With a slightly different take is Trademark Fine Art’s line by Christian Jackson. His stuff is far more abstract and muted, although the art itself is just as flat. The line includes a far greater selection of stories, including Mary Poppins and The Pied Piper, among others. Jackson generally takes one single element of the story to use as the artwork. So an apple for Snow White, bowls of porridge for Goldilocks and some undies for The Emperor’s New Clothes.

Look! I’m a … . Bedding you can be!

A lot of kids bedroom themes are based on some dream job the child thinks they want someday. (My niece wants to be a purple unicorn. Just saying.)

So, it’s no wonder space, auto racing, ballet and under water themes are among the most popular. And I absolutely am in love with two lines of bedding that take the “wanna be” concept just a bit further.

With each of these, the bedding puts a dressed up body on the top of the duvet cover or comforter, with a “head” design on the pillow right where your child’s head would go. Every night, they go to bed being an astronaut or mermaid or whatever else tickles their fancy.

There are two different brands at work here. The Snurk ones take a more simple approach with just the costume on a plain white background. All of Snurk’s are duvet covers sized for US bedding – mostly twin, although they have started releasing a few bigger sizes. The Dream Big brand puts your child in context under the water or at the race track, all on a twin comforter. Bonus of adding more colors and action, as well as not having so much white in a child’s room.

I’ve arranged the ones available right now by design so you can see the two astronauts and two princesses side by side. Those are the only themes that overlap between the two brands. I could so see cowboy joining this list since it has the requisite specialized headgear. But I have to admit I’m failing to think of others for girls. Ideas?

Zombie pillow pets – child appropriate?

OK – before I start, I’m not a big zombie fan. But one of my nephews is. He’s 7. Which kind of knocks him out of the age range for any of the actual zombie media, really.

So who knows why he’s obsessed with them, but he is. When I ran across these zombie pillow pets, I immediately thought of them for him for Christmas. After all, pillow pets are perfect for that age range. They even come in a boy zombie complete with office worker attire (Shaun of the Dead anyone?) and a zombie girl who obviously needed a bib when she was eating her brains. They fold with the front of the character to the outside.

But … .

Really, is that an appropriate gift for a 7-year-old? Got me wondering. Have any thoughts?

Think bamboo bedding for a panda-themed room

white bedding with green bamboo design

Mourning the loss of the Animal Planet panda bedding set lately. It was perfect – purple, panda, bamboo. A great centerpiece to the panda bedroom idea I dreamed up ages ago.

But, designs move on and so must we, unfortunately. (I’m always sad when people ask me where to find old bedding designs that just aren’t available anywhere anymore.)

So color me happy when I ran across the green and white bedding set pictured here. It’s a great shade of green in a design that looks enough like bamboo growing to work in an Asian or panda-themed bedroom. There are splashes of yellow, turquoise and purple to add some extra color and provide some directions for your color palette. Although it fits right in with the greens and pinks of the room design I came up with since most of the pink was in the bedding.

I like the way they pulled the blue out from the comforter to paint the walls, but you could go with one of the greens if you preferred. Definitely calls for a color on the wall behind the bed, though, to contrast with all that white.

Inexpensive artwork from an old calendar

Cinderella Exclusive Barbie PrintFashion Shelby 50th Anniversary Barbie PrintLimited Edition Vintage Veronica Barbie Print

Barbie is so glamorous, isn’t she? Especially in these gorgeous fashion art prints.

And wouldn’t you know it? The price is pretty glamorous too!

These exclusive, limited edition prints come in two different framed options – silver at $150 and with a mat at $135 – or unframed for $99, all from PoshTots. And you can choose from Barbie in all sorts of couture from evening gown to daywear.

Barbie 2012 mini calendar cover - pink Cinderella dressBut for the price of just one of those, you could have an entire collection, easy peasy. That’s because the 2012 and 2013 versions of Barbie calendars are using this exact same artwork! Just rip up a calendar, frame in the images and you can have a similar look for way less. In fact, you can be pretty flexible in how use use them since you’ll only have invested a few dollars. Decoupage them on furniture, cut them into different shapes – it’s all up to you.

Barbie 2012 mini calendar - all imagesThe 2012 mini wall calendar pictured to the right includes the dresses in the images above, plus others (some in the image here to the left). They come in at 7″x7″; not a standard frame size, so expect to get creative on how you display them. The 2013 Barbie wall calendar is using the exact same images, so you can get them in a larger, almost 12″ square size now as well. Those would be more dramatic and possibly easier to find frames for.

Barbie 2012 mini calendar - January - black evening gown
You can see the mini calendar uses the Veronica print with Barbie in the elegant black evening gown for January. With nothing but the dress image as the top part of the month, it’s easy to use it as art. Best way to go about it would be to remove the staples from the entire calendar, then use a straight edge to cut the bottom edge of the image. This gives you the best possible piece of paper for framing.

I did find some interesting frames in sizes like 8″x8″ and 12″x12″. Both would call for at least a small mat. Floating glass frames are also a good option if you can find the right shape. I found a set of 12 glass and metal clip frames in the 8″ square size, so you could do the entire year.

(You can score the 2012 calendar over at Calendars.com for a great price while they last!)

Kids Bedroom Ideas: Cool growth chart to learn as well as measure

growth chartDid your parents mark your height along a door frame? Great idea if you never plan to move and don’t mind having the woodwork in the family room all marked up.

Growth charts are a cool alternative. They’re easy to hang, easy to move and easy to save forever. (Unlike the door jam!)

One of the coolest ones I’ve found recently is this I’m As Big As Height Comparison Wall Chart over at Amazon. It does more than just measure how tall you are, it measures how tall you are against odd things like the height of a prehistoric rodent and largest known watermelon. Your child will be standing on their tip-toes to finally be as high as the Pygmy goat.

One caveat to this growth chart. It’s from the UK, so everything’s in the metric system. (Good chance to bone up on your conversion skills.) The items on the chart are also pretty UK-centric and done in English currency as well. So pound on this chart is referring to money, not weight.

The design is bright and modern, making it appropriate for any child. Not to mention a great way to kick off a regular research project to figure out just what is a Pygmy goat!
